When you lose sight

We recently found out that our family dog has lost his sight. He is an 11-year-old miniature pincher named Max. He’s been with us since he was six months old. We’ve moved two times since we brought him home.  He has always adapted very well to new surroundings. To be honest he’s been a pain in my ass for almost a decade. He peas on the floor often. He was diagnosed with diabetes last year so now requires insulin injections twice a day. He is stubborn, , with an attitude. But we love him and at times even enjoy his company. Ha ha

The diabetes has caused him to develop cataracts. 100% on one side, 80% coverage on the other, at the time of his last visit in November. He can’t see my hand in front of his face. He is now dependent upon his other sense completely. He knows how to navigate the house from memory so if we leave a chair out of place he will run right into it, snout first.

The day we realized he woke up and could not see we called the vet to take him in. Thankfully his blood sugars is managed and we made a small .5 adjustment to his insulin intake. Aside from not being able to see he is healthy. He was down for about a day. Then he just went on about life as if he had always been this way.

I’m watching him fumble around on my bed this morning and just really admiring his choice to just move on. He didn’t lay around, depressed like I hear some animals
do, when facing a major life change. He just woke up the next day and decided that he was hungry and had to go pee so he whined his usual whine, he popped right outdoors to pee, found his way back in, and chowed down. He really hasn’t missed a beat ever since.

I’m enjoying watching him venture further out into the yard each time. Cautiously investigating all of the smells. In the snow you can actually see how closely he follows the same path.

Losing sight has slowed him down a little bit, but for the most part he is unphased. We should all be so blessed to accept our circumstances in life and just step forward in them.
